HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) - Voting officials are trying to find some missing ballots following the November 6 general election.

The items are provisional ballots from Precinct 20, Aldersgate United Methodist Church.  Lynda Hairston, Chairman of the Madison County Board of Registrars, said the envelopes containing those ballots cannot be located.

Jeff Rich, Madison County Attorney, filed a notice in Madison County Circuit Court on Hairston's behalf.  The filing says Chairman Hairston believes the envelopes with the provisional ballots may be sealed in the provisional ballot containers for Precinct 20.

Hairston requested an order from the court allowing the sealed provisional ballot containers to be opened to determine if the envelopes were mistakenly placed there, and if so, allow Hairston to remove them.

The Board of Registrars is in the process of checking all of Madison County's provisional ballots following the election.  These are 'challenge ballots' used by voters who did not show ID, or who may have come to the wrong polling location to vote.  They could have also been from people who were crossed off on the list as if they had voted absentee, but didn't.

No word on how many provisional ballots were cast at Precinct 20.
