ATHENS, Ala. (WHNT) – A longtime employee of the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office retired last week.  Lt. Randy Bates had 28 years of service in various positions, including Work Release Director, supervising inmates working in paying jobs as well as trustee inmates.

One inmate had a surprise for Lt. Bates.  When the inmate, Sam, learned Lt. Bates was planning to retire, he started a special woodworking project. He obtained some wood pieces, paying for them himself. On Friday, Sam presented a beautiful shadow box to Lt. Bates.

“He knows we have made mistakes that we are ashamed of, but he always treats us with dignity,” Sam said.

Lt. Bates said he was humbled by the community’s outpouring of support.

“I enjoy coming to work,” Lt. Bates said.  “I will miss this and all the people I come in contact with every day.”
