HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Rebecca Bradshaw says she was disturbed on Black Friday at Madison Square Mall. She tells WHNT News 19 she went to the JC Penney and found limited lights on where she wanted to park.

"There were no lights, and I felt very uncomfortable," she said. "I actually stayed in my car before I got out until somebody else got out and I could walk in with them."

Since then, WHNT News 19 observed multiple lights on in that parking lot. But not every light post is on. This is not the first time there has been concern about that issue in this area.

"It's still too dark," said Bradshaw. "To me, it should be much brighter."

A representative from RCP Companies, the mall's owner, told WHNT News 19 by email:

"As we prepare for the redevelopment of Madison Square Mall, the number of tenants and required lighting have drastically reduced respectively. That said, there is ample lighting surrounding the remaining stores as well as on-site security 24 hours a day. We encourage any patron of the remaining stores to park near the entrances."

Bradshaw said she has also observed low lighting in other parking lots in Huntsville, too. She tells us she has brought it up to some businesses. She believes her comments have made a difference, and wants to spread a message to area business owners.

"Let there be light," she said. "I'm a consumer and I believe in safety, not just for myself but anyone else. Especially women, children. Yes, you should feel safe where you're going."

Huntsville Police say there have not been any robberies or felony crimes committed during this first week of the holiday season in the Rocket City, neither at Madison Square mall nor any of the other shopping centers. Most of the complaints stem from shoplifting. They praise the citizens for staying aware, extra officers who patrol, and the businesses for keeping a watchful eye.
