HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Several viewers have called the WHNT News 19 Newsroom, concerned about a large amount of black smoke coming from Redstone Arsenal.  The smoke is viewable from downtown Huntsville.  Arsenal officials confirm that the smoke is related to a missile round test.

“Arsenal officials announced today that a Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense – THAAD – missile round, equipped with a Thermally Initiated Venting System safety feature, is being tested at a range on the south side of the installation,” spokesman Dan O’Boyle said in a news release.

The test will verify the system’s compliance with the nation’s Insensitive Munitions law, which mandates that munitions be stable enough to withstand mechanical shocks, fire, and impact, O’Boyle added.
