HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) --  The start of the school year means the beginning of after-school tutoring programs.  The Inner City Christian Learning Center offers a safe place for children to go after the bell rings. Kids can do their homework, participate in Bible studies, and get help in basic school subjects.  However, the center desperately needs tutors to volunteer.

"The kids of the inner city, of course people look for them not to succeed, but we know with the help of people they can succeed," said Timmy Smith, the minister at Inner City Church of Christ.

The Christian Learning Center provides more than just paper and pencils. It also gives children hope. "We go back and look at our lives with a single parent, in the projects, the same thing, people looked for me not to succeed but with the help of God we are able to do it," he said.

"We want to be able to provide services to these children," said Jahnitta Lovejoy. " But we can't do it without tutors and this is our future. It's just very important that we get tutors and mostly, we have a shortage of male tutors."

The center starts tutoring next week and it needs all the help it can get. "We are looking for individuals who have an interest in children and would like to volunteer for an hour a week," said Lovejoy.

"It helps me get ready for my future," said Valencia Powell, a 5th grade student.  'It helps me get my grades up and it helps me learn more about the Bible."

Wanda Briggs has volunteered as a tutor for several years. She gets emotional just thinking about all of the children she's worked with after school. "I love the children, they're so awesome," said Briggs. "I just love working with them," she said with teary eyes.

At the end of the day, she knows she's making a difference. "I feel like something has been accomplished, I really do. I really do."

If you would like to volunteer to be a tutor, you can visit the Learning Center's website here. They are also in need of van drivers to pick up students and drop them off at home.

The center is located at 309 Seminole Dr, Huntsville, AL 35806. You can reach them at (256)536-8289 .
