HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Huntsville Utilities warns customers that scammers are trying to steal money over the phone.

Huntsville Utilities says several people have reported this.  The caller claims to be an employee of Huntsville Utilities, and threatens the person with disconnection of service if the person does not immediately pay over the phone or with a pre-paid debit card.

The caller then urges the customer to call a toll-free number to make the payment.  This is not legitimate – it’s a scam.

If you get a call from someone claiming to be with Huntsville Utilities, the utility urges you to ask the person for specific information, including their name and company contact information.

If you have any question about your account, you can call Huntsville Utilities at (256) 535-1200.  You can also report any suspicious activity.
