HUNTSVILLE, Ala, (WHNT) — District one Huntsville city councilman Dr. Richard Showers has been hospitalized following apparent cardiac issues.

WHNT News 19 learned Monday, that Showers has now been in the hospital for more than a week.

Huntsville City Council President Mark Russell says generally if a councilman is absent due to health reasons or otherwise the council will table any proposals or initiatives requiring the vote of the absent council member. Russell says Showers’ staff are taking messages from members of his district and passing any urgent ones along.

The council will meet Thursday night but Russell says they do not expect Showers to attend as he continues to recover. Showers is currently in the cardiac wing of Huntsville Hospital. WHNT News 19 will continue to reach out to friends and family in order to provide an update on the councilman’s recovery.
