HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Members of Holmes Street United Methodist Church in Huntsville gathered outside their sanctuary on Sunday for a special service.

The church broke ground on a new multipurpose addition for their facility.

The new wing will bring elevators and a handful of handicap accessible features to improve the comfort of the church’s congregation. The building will also include extra space for youth activities and a large area for worship.

The plan for the building has been in progress for three years and building committee heads say it has been a long time coming.

“This brings a lot of things, one is a safety issue something that needed to be updated for the last several years,” said Randy Moody, chairman of the church’s building committee.

“We can have ground level accessibility, elevators for handicap accessibilities, and it will bring a bigger and more open space for all the users,” said Moody.

The church says they hope to have the multi-purpose addition completed by October of 2013.
