HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) -- Twickenham Square has been two and half years in the making.

The site near Huntsville Hospital will have a Publix grocery store, Homewood Suites hotel, new office space and residential housing. Developers say there is space for up to four new restaurants and other retail shops.

Twickenham Square will cover 11.3 acres at the former Councill Courts public housing site in the heart of the medical district.

Bristol Development Group of Franklin, Tenn., and PGM Properties of Brentwood, Tenn., are teaming up to develop the apartments, shops and restaurants at Twickenham Square.

The city's part in this project includes a public parking deck as well as a new four-lane landscaped boulevard immediately west of the site that will create a direct link between Governors Drive and Big Spring International Park.

City planners say there may be some traffic detours in the area while work continues.
