HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) - Battling cancer is tough as it comes, but a local man is also fighting another fight - affording his fight against cancer.
“If anything could go bad, it went bad," says Russell Dix.
October 2013, Russell was laid off from his job. Just two months later, he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. He battled the disease for seven months and went into remission. He also got back to work at Earth and Stone Wood Fired Pizza at Campus 805. Unfortunately, the good didn't last.
“It didn’t last a month for the pain to start coming back and I fought through that. I fought through the pain for almost three months because I had to pay the bills," says Dix.
That pain turned out to be the cancer returning, this time with a vengeance. He was diagnosed with Stage IV Lymphoma that spread to his bones and the entire left side of his body. This go around, his chemo treatments are so intense, he has to be hospitalized for five days in a row, every three weeks. “Each of these visits runs about $80 to $90 thousand," says Dix.
Social Security denied his disability claim, so only being able to work a few hours a week at the restaurant has left him broke. “I’ve already gotten an eviction notice," he says.
Most people would be focused on their own battle, but not Russ. He says if people will help him afford his cancer treatment, he'll establish a charity called "Russell's Last Ride for Cancer," where he'll drive his motorcycle from coast to coast, raising awareness and money for men battling cancer. “I need their help and if they help me I’m willing to help other people," he says.
His employer, Earth and Stone Wood Fired Pizza is hosting a fundraiser for Russ, Thursday May 27th. A portion of all sales will go towards his medical expenses.
