MADISON COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) – The Madison County Sheriff’s Office announced that former deputy and school resource officer Jerome Heard, 41, has been indicted on charges for inappropriate contact with a student.

Authorities say the sexual encounters took place during the 2012-2013 school year, during which time Heard worked as an SRO at Sparkman High.

Heard turned himself in Friday, posted a $70,000 bond, and has since been released, according to authorities.

Heard was indicted on two charges:

  • School employee engaging in a sex act or deviant sexual intercourse with a student under the age of 19; punishable up to ten years in prison
  • First degree sodomy; punishable for ten years to life

According to statements from the office at the media conference, the female victim was sixteen or seventeen at the time of the crimes, and she no longer lives in Alabama.

The Madison County School System released the following statement:

“The Madison County School System is cooperating fully with the Madison County Sheriff’s Office in the investigation of one of its former school resource officers. We are committed to helping the Sheriff’s Office as part of our joint commitment to ensure the safety and security of our students.”

Heard has been employed by the MCSO since 2009 and resigned on January 4. Authorities say he has since relocated out of state. He is also a former Huntsville Police officer from 2003-2007.

Heard also worked at Monrovia Middle during the 2013-2014 schools year and at Meridianville Middle at the start of the 2015 school year. Once the allegations came about in June 2015, he was removed from any contact with the county school system.

Investigators say they only have one victim at this time, but want any information the community may have on Heard and/or other possible victims. The Criminal Investigation Division number is 256-533-8820.
