MADISON COUNTY, Ala. – It’s been called the super bowl of professional fishing, the Forrest L. Wood Cup or FLW. Come August 2016, Huntsville will host one of the industry’s richest events.
The major event will make a big splash in the Rocket City August 4 -7 of next year. Anglers will compete for $500,000 and those who place won’t be the only ones winning,
“We know that we will get $1 to $2 million just in publicity from the event,” explained Huntsville/Madison County Convention & Visitors Bureau Sales Manager Don Dukemineer.
The event puts in at Ditto Landing and the world’s best anglers will fish in Wheeler Lake. There will also be a Junior Championship.
“Two kids, ages 11-18 years old from every state will come in and fish a tournament too,” said Dukemineer.
“They are going to fill our hotels up, restaurants, and we will come in and show them a good time.”
The event is projected to bring in between 30,000 to 40,000 people and have an economic impact of more than $2 million.
The weigh-ins will be at the Von Braun Center along with an Expo for the public. As for fishing enthusiasts around the world, the event will be broadcast to more than 564 million households worldwide.
Dukemineer says this will truly showcase Huntsville’s ability to host a major event and put the city on track to attract more high-profile events in the future.
“A lot of people say we are not sure about coming to Huntsville,” he said. “But once they come here and they see what we have they are sold on it. So if we get them here we feel like that we can get more events coming to town.”
