HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Firefighters responded to an apartment fire Wednesday afternoon just north of Alabama A&M University.
The fire was at Magnolia Place Apartments near Winchester Road and Meridian Street around 1:30 p.m.
Huntsville Fire & Rescue tells WHNT News 19 that 15 apartment units were badly damaged. A quarter of an acre behind the building caught fire due to high winds. One person got taken to the hospital with smoke inhalation.
Huntsville Fire & Rescue continue to investigate the cause of the fire. Around 4:20 p.m., fire crews say they finally accounted everybody. They also rescued and reunited a cat with its owner.
The American Red Cross is on the scene helping displaced students.
Alabama A&M police officers first saw smoke and started knocking on doors to get people out.
