HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Ed Starnes, a longtime public leader in the City of Huntsville, died Saturday.  He was 79 years old.

Starnes spent 22 years on the Huntsville Planning Commission and was also a past chair.  He was also a past president of the Huntsville School Board.

“Ed Starnes was a true servant leader, and he left his mark on this community in numerous ways,” said Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle. “The countless hours he spent at the helm of the Huntsville School Board and the Huntsville Planning Commission were his gift to our community. For Ed, it was never about himself, it was always about what he could give back.”

In recent years, Starnes was known for his watercolor paintings.

Starnes resigned from the Huntsville Planning Commission last October for health reasons.

Laughlin Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
