HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -  The team at the Downtown Rescue Mission broke ground on their new Women's and Children's Building on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. It will be built on the mission's campus located at 1400 Evangel Drive.

The campus is 16 acres total and the new facility will sit on 10 acres of it.

"This will also expand our men's facility too because it will open up the space where the women and children were that we can use that for programs for the men," President Keith Overholt said. "So, that facility will just be for men and we'll have a family unit there as well and we'll have this facility for the women and children."

This 30,000 square foot building will allow the Downtown Rescue Mission to serve up to 200 women and children. That is more than double the amount of people they are able to serve now.  Currently, the mission houses around 190 people every night.

"We will be able to take care of the mom that has a son," Overholt said. "We'll be able to take care of family units now."

One year from now, the mission's staff hopes this building will cover those in crisis or whom have simply lost their way. For Overholt, this is an eight year old dream come true.

"We had to put men and women in the same building and just at that point I said, 'we want to have something separate for the women and children,'" Overholt said.

The Downtown Rescue Mission has raised about $4.8 million of the nearly $7 million they are hoping for. Those with the mission said $6 million will cover the cost of the building but the extra $1 million will go towards operating funds and furnishings.

The mission's team is currently working with a bridge loan to cover the cost of building the new facility. They hope the community will help them raise the remainder of funding they need.
