HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) - Real "dog people" will always tell you they cannot imagine having to give up their pets. But some service members, don't see any other choice when they get deployed.

"People have just been at the shelter in tears not thinking that they have any other option," confides Lara Elizabeth Knight.

That's where Dogs on Deployment comes in. The online service connects service members to people willing to foster their pets in the meantime.

Knight is the Dogs on Deployment's Alabama Coordinator. She tells us, "We actually have successfully deployed over 700 pets."

But they need help serving those deploying from our state.

She adds, "Last year we only had one in Alabama."

Knight says they just don't have the awareness in our state yet, from both service members and fosters.

That's why she says she needs your help, "Right now, I'm hoping to find some volunteers in the area that can help me get some events planned. We're looking to expand to get some business partners in the area. Looking for people who will work the events. Pretty much anyone  who's interested in volunteering can get in contact with me, and I can help you find some way to help us out."

Because pet people love their pets, and they shouldn't have to give them up to serve.
