HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — The community is coming together to do what they can to help the family of a little boy who was killed after a hit-and-run in September.
There’s a bright spot on the side of Highway 72 in Huntsville. Flowers and mementos depict the support and love a community is showing for Weixi Zhang. Some knew him, others didn’t. It doesn’t matter though, what matters is a little boy lost his life.
Huntsville Police arrested LaTonya Denise Haley in relation to the hit and run.
With charges pending, business at the Zhang family’s restaurant, Meteor Buffet, is as usual.
Saturday though, thanks to the generosity of a community things were a little different at the family’s business.
Chris Sanders is one of the fundraiser organizers.”I’ve got a two-piece acoustic group called AC Junction and we put together a full band and we did a benefit concert,” Sanders says.
He says they had help from all over the community.”This benefit didn’t cost anything, because all the businesses donated everything we needed.” Sanders says the turnout was touching to see, and for him, it hits close to home. “Our band plays here every Tuesday night, I’ve been eating at this restaurant for years, and I’ve come to know the family really well.”
Sanders says he’s watched Weixi and his siblings grow up, so putting this fundraiser together was the least he could do.
