HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) - An agreement with Southern Light, a company that provides fiber internet, will go before the Huntsville City Council on Thursday.
City of Huntsville Business Relations Officer Harrison Diamond explains that it is a basic franchise agreement that lets Southern Light do business in the city and sets ground rules for the city's right-of-ways.
Diamond adds, "We issue out these franchise agreements fairly regularly."
However, details of exactly how much fiber the company will provide have not emerged.
Diamond teases, "I know they're about to have a pretty big announcement coming up June 10th, so definitely stay tuned for that."
We reached out to Southern Light. They didn't want to give away too many details about their plans, but they did confirm the news conference on June 10th with the city to announce their new operations.
We do know the deal with Southern Light is not the final answer to the city's Request for Information. Diamond tells us he's still reviewing the 13 responses to the RFI.
"I feel pretty good about what we've seen so far. We do need to meet to make sure all our goals are met," he said.
However, with the Southern Light agreement looming, we can already tell options for the super-high speed internet are diversifying.
