ATHENS, Ala. (WHNT) – The City of Athens Relay for Life Team hosted its annual Celebrity Waiters Night at Applebee’s on Tuesday night.
For the past 15 years, the City of Athens has participated in Relay for Life to raise money for the American Cancer Society’s fight for a cure and efforts to provide prevention education.
Celebrity Waiters Night was able to raise $1,735.25 in tips and $120 in T-shirt sales.
Coincidentally, that night a couple dining at Applebee’s were on their way to visit their family after the recent death of the husband’s brother who was suffering from cancer. The man told Celebrity Waiter Probate Judge Charles Woodroof that his brother had died from cancer, so he donated a $50 tip to Woodroof in memory of his brother.
“No matter how much we raised, I had the best story of the night,” Woodroof said. “He could have stopped at any exit and any restaurant, and he ended up here where we are fundraising to find a cure.”
