HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Capshaw Road has been a problem spot for many residents in Huntsville and Madison County for years — many complaining it’s just too dangerous.
Huntsville is proposing to add phase two of improvements to Capshaw Road to the 10-year capital plan.
“[It] was originally a two-lane country road that supported the farms in that area. There weren’t a lot of folks that lived out there when it first was built,” said Huntsville City Administrator John Hamilton.
It was meant originally for tractors and now “the community has grown up around it and we need to expand that road,” said Hamilton.
The road will be expanded from two lanes to five, costing the city of Huntsville $10.5 million by the time it’s all said and done.
Five hundred thousand dollars of that money is going towards the design process in 2019. “There’s several years required through the design, environmental impact studies, purchasing right of way and moving utilities,” Hamilton said, before the full $10 million would be in place by 2024 for phase two of Capshaw Road.
“So it’s quite a while out before you see any real improvements to the road,” said Hamilton.
Phase one of the project happened back in the early 2000s, expanding from SR 255 to just west of Providence Main. Phase two of the Capshaw Road widening will start at Old Monrovia Road, by Providence Elementary and end at Jeff Road.
Unfortunately, this still doesn’t touch the problematic S-curve between Nance Road and Wall Triana. “It would be a significant project, that’s why you’ll see it broken up into phases. We’ll focus right now on that piece to the east of Jeff Road and hopefully we’ll then get to the west side of it,” said Hamilton.
