HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Monday, authorities released new details about the events surrounding the arrest of several people after an altercation at Bridge Street Town Centre near Monaco Pictures Movie Theater Saturday night.

The Madison County Sheriff's Office said around 10:00 p.m. Saturday night, two off duty deputies working at Bridge Street Town Centre reported "several hundred individuals, mostly unescorted and unsupervised juveniles, involved in several physical altercations within their groups." The deputies were told that a person was seen with a firearm among the crowd.

When the crowd grew larger, officers from the Huntsville Police Department, ALEA State Troopers, Owens Cross Roads Police Department, New Hope Police Department, and the Madison Police Department responded to help disperse the crowd.

It took over an hour to restore order, but law enforcement officers were able to get the crowd under control with fewer than five arrests and no major injuries. One juvenile was arrested for assaulting a deputy. The deputy had to use his Taser and pepper spray to disperse a crowd around the juvenile attempting to hinder the arrest, Madison County Sheriff Blake Dorning said.

Authorities said no gun was discovered.

Sheriff Dorning said unsupervised juvenile activity Saturday evening was the underlying reason for the incident. He said that parents and guardians should be aware of Bridge Street Town Center's juvenile escort policy.

"Parents should know where and with whom their children are with as well as their activities and any rules, policy, or procedures for their presence at any location. Unsupervised juvenile activity is a leading cause of trouble for teenagers when involved in a crowd," Dorning said.

Managers at Bridge Street released the following statement about the incident:

At Bridge Street Town Centre, we are committed first and foremost to the safety of our shoppers and shopping center employees.

For this reason, when the incident occurred on the evening of Saturday, August 15, our security personnel were on hand quickly and also issued an immediate summons to local law enforcement. As a result of this rapid response, the incident was contained.

We are now cooperating with the local authorities’ investigation of this incident.
