HUNTSVILLE, Ala.(WHNT)-Police have yet to identify a suspect or motive, but the attorney who helped finalize Lt. Col. Alonzo McGhee's divorce is speaking out about his client's case and subsequent brutal murder.

Huntsville Attorney Mark McDaniel represented McGhee during his divorce proceeding, which was finalized on December 28th. One week later McGhee's bullet-riddled body was found laying outside the Owens Cross Roads home where his ex-wife lives. McDaniel said Lt. Col. McGhee also used to live at the home on Pale Dawn Drive, but had already moved out before his divorce from Filis McGhee was finalized.

Huntsville police investigators have not identified a suspect or motive. Detectives have not made any link between the timing of McGhee's divorce proceeding and murder which happened a week later. Mark McDaniel called the divorce case "messy" and "very contentious", and said his office was cooperating with investigators.

"Our client got this [divorce] decree on Friday," said McDaniel. "On the next Friday he was slaughtered. He was slaughtered in front of the house where his wife and children reside...I'm not at liberty at this point to say why he [Alonzo] went over there. He was not going into the house, he was in the road, in his car...If you go out to the scene and see how many shell cases are out there on the road, a lot of bullets were fired out there."

A court order obtained by WHNT News 19 confirms that a judge granted Alonzo McGhee sole custody of the three children from his marriage to Filis McGhee. Filis McGhee is the former principal at Hampton Cove Elementary. She was fired from that position in 2011 over fraud allegations.
