HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Officials are responding to a wreck at westbound I-565 near the Jordan Lane exit.

According to authorities, two people were injured, one received life-threatening injuries.

Police received reports saying the driver who hit the 18 wheeler was driving on the wrong side of the interstate. Officials have closed 3 westbound lanes of traffic and two eastbound lanes.

Drivers should expect delays in this area and proceed with caution.

Huntsville Police reopened the westbound lanes of the interstate around 9 a.m.

Police said they’ve seen situations like this before.

“The handful of drivers that we have had going the wrong way on the interstate, majority of them when we had wrecks like this morning or overnight usually involved drivers that were driving under the influence,” explained Lt. Michael Johnson of the Huntsville Police Department.

Authorities said they have reason to believe this wreck is no different.

“We have evidence from the scene and from the person that we suspect they were driving under the influence,” he explained. “That evidence will be processed and we’ll be able to understand more about how the driver was behind the wheel.”

Now, police want to remind drivers to be responsible on the road.

“We do have a DUI enforcement, we have patrol officers out on the roadways and they make DUI arrests weekly,” Johnson added.

Police say driving under the influence could not only hurt you but the other drivers around you.

“When you get on a roadway like the interstate, pay attention to your surroundings.”

If you happen to be traveling along an interstate and see someone on the wrong side of it, pull over and notify authorities immediately.
