Tuesday night drivers faced a surprise stop in Huntsville. Huntsville police set up a checkpoint to help keep the roads safe.
The increased checkpoints began with a recent grant for the HPD from the State of Alabama to fund those checkpoints.
Police set up the safety checkpoint on Drake Avenue, near Patton Road just after 11:00 Tuesday night. Officers asked drivers for the proper documents: license, registration and insurance. They also asked how much the drivers had to drink, and for a half dozen of them, the answer was too much. In the first 30 minutes of the checkpoint, officers made 3 DUI arrests.
A few drivers also found themselves behind bars for outstanding warrants, while just under 75 more were given citations, mostly for not having proof of insurance.
The grant for Huntsville Police will allow them to conduct two more checkpoints. Weather permitting, they plan to set them up Friday and Saturday nights and target Memorial Parkway in Huntsville.
