HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — One man is dead after being shot on Atkins Drive in Huntsville on Sunday morning.

Huntsville Police are calling this a murder investigation.

The man died while at Huntsville Hospital, according to authorities.

Lieutenant Michael Johnson of Huntsville Police confirmed to WHNT News 19 that there is one male suspect. They later identified and arrested him Sunday evening.

Johnson said initially, authorities believed that suspect was hiding in a nearby home. They searched the neighborhood and visited neighbors for answers and more information.

“We received information that they were possibly at another house on Atkins, the 2300 block. We called out SWAT and a couple of that personnel, we made a tactical approach to that house,” Johnson said. But the suspect was not found there.

The suspect and victim’s identities have not been released at this time.

Police said it is possible the two knew each other, but the investigation will have to uncover more to confirm that. As police work to determine who is behind this and why, they say they’ll examine all possibilities.

“We’re not going to rule out anything. Investigators are going to look at everything possible here,” Johnson stated.

This violence comes after a separate shooting early Saturday morning on Country Club Avenue outside Club Allure. Police said Justen Wherry is charged with murder in that unrelated case.

Huntsville Police say it’s rare to have two back-to-back fatal shootings over a weekend in the city.
