HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Thursday, November 15 marks the annual Great American Smokeout, as well as America Recycles Day.  Huntsville Hospital’s Green Team will mark both with a special event.

From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the main cafeteria, there will be a tobacco turn-in for employees pledging to stop using tobacco products.  Employees can also recycle cans and bottles.  There will be door prizes and giveaways for all participants, while supplies last.

Huntsville Hospital is preparing to go tobacco-free on February 1, 2013.  The new policy will apply to all persons, including staff, physicians, patients and visitors; and it covers all buildings and parking decks which are owned or leased by the hospital. There will no longer be any exterior areas where smoking is permitted.

UAB Medicine announced Wednesday that beginning July 1, 2013, it will not hire people who test positive for tobacco use.
