HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Wednesday is Halloween and children will be scouring around collecting as much candy as they can — much to the horror of their teeth.

So a Huntsville dentist came up with a battle plan to save teeth from the sugar and plaque of candy.

Dr. Amy Thompson is offering a candy buyback, where she’ll pay $1 per pound of candy, then send it all to U.S. troops serving overseas.

She did it last year for the first time and received well over 100 pounds of candy and shelled out more than $100.

“It really is important to them because it’s a touch of home,” said Darlene Upton, the wife of a soldier. “It’s something that they don’t have over there.”

“Kids get way too much candy at Halloween, so if we can take some of that and send it over to the troops, I thought it would be a good idea,” said Dr. Thompson.

Dr. Thompson will be accepting the candy at her office on Thursday and Friday.  Her office is located at 111 Park Place Drive, Suite F in Huntsville.

She’ll also accept hand-written notes or pictures to the troops, to lift their spirits.

And she says the soldiers can always use baby wipes too, but no reimbursement for those.

You don’t have to be a patient of Dr. Thompson to drop the candy off for cash back.
