HUNTSVILLE, Ala (WHNT) – With the housing market on an uptick, house flipping is back in the headlines.  You may have recently heard advertisements from Than Merrill.  He’s one of the hosts of the A&E hit show 'Flip This House,' and has become well known for his real estate successes.

Ads promise an informative “Free” seminar that will help you get started making money 'Flipping Houses' right here in the local area.

WHNT News 19 attended the seminar, to see if the word “Free” rang true.  But after an hour and a half, we experienced more hype, than any real instructional advice.

In the end, the event ended up being a recruiting opportunity, where the real estate associates tried to sell the crowd on another, three-day seminar - for just under $200.   They said to act quickly, and that typically this opportunity would cost $1,197.

Some people walked out, others signed up.  We learned that the $200 three-day seminar is happening this coming May.

North Alabama BBB President Elizabeth Garcia says attendees need to walk in informed.

“Most people are going to this seminar because they want to try to make money,” said Garcia.” “They need to do something to make ends meet, but you have to understand in seminars such as this, it takes money to invest, to make money.”

And that’s the bottom line.  You aren’t going to learn a lot of substantive information during the two hours you’re there.

In fact, Than Merrill's website says it best.

“Most people who attend this introductory free event do not apply the strategies, techniques and systems and therefor make little to no money.”

These seminars operate under a company called Fortune Builders Inc.

They have an A+ rating with the BBB in San Diego, with 14 closed complaints dealing with primarily advertising issues.

There's 4 more "free" seminars slated for Huntsville on Friday & Saturday.
