DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) – With Christmas just days away, our thoughts quite naturally turn to our friends and family, and spending time with loved ones. But for a parent who has just recently lost a child, the holidays can be an especially painful time of year. How do you cope with something like that? WHNT News 19’s Al Whitaker introduces us to a woman who says she survives on the strength of her faith.

“Well, this is the first holiday season that we’ve had without Andrew.”

Andrew Beach was killed this summer in a horrific automobile accident. His mother, Holly Beach, says a drunk driver who had just left a bar, crashed into her son’s car, killing him instantly. She says since that moment, life has been surreal, and the reminders are everywhere.

“It’s not something intentional that people do. but even a normal conversation about your children, other people talking about their kids, you’re never far away from realizing that your child has been killed and killed in such a violent manner. And so, it’s very, very hard, just normal life, especially this time of year,” Beach says.

Beach tells us her tears are always just below the surface and her strength to face each day is derived solely from her faith. Her Christmas will be filled with memories of happier days.

“We planted a little Christmas tree. That’s Andrew’s tree. And some of his friends came out there and decorated the Christmas tree and sent us a picture and said this is Andrew’s Christmas tree. So we know we have a Christmas tree for him. It’s not in our house, but it is in our hearts.”

Holly Beach shared her grief with us for one reason, and that was to plead with you, don’t drink and drive. Please.

Ms. Beach says despite the many witnesses, the man who crashed his car into her son’s car has not been arrested or charged with the crime.
