ATHENS, Ala. (WHNT) -- Hazmat specialists from around the country have been in Athens this week. They’ve been training at Leak City, a one of a kind facility right here at home.

Pipeline Safety Specialist, Wayne St. Germain said some of the visiting specialists are federal inspectors, and some are state inspectors from around the country. Some came from as far away as New Mexico, Arizona, and Washington, DC. They train in a variety of subjects, but this Hazmat training specifically pertains to oil products that are in a pipeline.

The training helps hazmat crews gain a better understanding of the hazardous chemicals in pipelines.

"We’re trying to maintain the integrity of pipeline systems in the country and that’s what their job is, but to know what’ s in them and to understand the products and the dangers involved helps them to fulfill the efforts they are doing on the safety efforts of pipeline safety." Germain said.

All covered in the three day training at Leak City in Athens, a one of a kind training facility in the country.

“It’s a fantastic facility, we’re really proud to have the ability to put on a class here and we’re really thankful the city council, the major has afforded us the opportunity to train here in Athens, Alabama.” Germain said.

The training at Leak City ended Wednesday.
