GURLEY, Ala. (WHNT) -- Kobe Cameron's time on Earth was short on length, but not short on meaning.

"He always had a smile, big blue eyes and a teeny, tiny, petite little child. He was just full of life," said Denise Howard.

The Camerons were at the Gurley Pool's Family Night on Thursday, June 12th, when Kobe fell off the third step of the diving board ladder hitting his head.

He was flown to Children's Hospital in Birmingham that night and died Monday.

But while Kobe was fighting for his life, members of the Gurley community rallied around him.

They gathered at the pool to hold a prayer vigil, even without many of them knowing him.

"It could have been any of our children and that's why it's so important for everybody to come together at a time like this and why everybody wants to help and wants to give because anybody can put themselves in that place if you have your own child or grandchild," said Howard.

Howard's son, Luke, grew up with Kobe and the two attended Madison County Elementary School together.

She also taught Kobe at church, so she knew she had to do something to honor his memory.

Howard started raising funds to help the Cameron family with medical expenses.

"I loved him very much," said Howard. "He was just a precious thing and I was like, what can I do, what can I do? And so this was just one way we could help."

WHNT News 19 reached out to the Cameron family.

They said they appreciate all the community has done for the family, but Howard says she has learned even more from the Camerons.

"This family how strong they were and are... I can't imagine. I just can't imagine being able to hold it together like they have," said Howard. "They've been very inspirational to me and I think pretty much everybody in the community."

If you would like to help, you can either donate to the "Kobe Cameron Memorial Fund" at your local Cadence Bank or you can click here.

All of the donations will go to the Cameron Family to help cover medical expenses and final arrangements.
