(WHNT) – Former senator Jeremiah Denton has died.

He spent seven-and-a-half years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam and served in the U.S. Senate from 1981 to 1987.

Denton was best known in his political career as being very blunt and very conservative.

But Denton is probably best known for a 1966 north Vietnamese television interview he was forced to make when he was a POW.

He was 89 years old
