GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) - Guntersville's former Parks and Recreation Director was sentenced Monday for stealing money from the department.

Ken Ard pleaded guilty to theft, and was sentenced to three years in prison followed by three years of probation.

Ard was fired in late 2011.  Guntersville Mayor Bob Hembree said accountants noticed irregularities in spending.

The Parks and Recreation budget is large, but the amount of money used was higher than it had been in previous years.

Hembree says Ard admitted wrongdoing, and offered restitution to pay back about $15,000.

The Marshall County District Attorney's Office then stepped in to take over the case, along with the Alabama Bureau of Investigation.
