BIRMNGHAM, Ala. (AP) — A former police officer in Alabama has been sentenced to six months in jail after pleading guilty to rape and attempted child sex abuse.
Al.com reported former Birmingham police officer Joshua Herbinger of Pleasant Grove turned himself in at the Shelby County jail Tuesday to begin the sentence.
Herbinger was arrested in 2014 on allegations he sexually abused a child and raped a woman.
Alabaster Police Chief Curtis Rigney said a young female victim reported the abuse to a school resource officer. Police said the abuse happened over a period of two to three years.
Herbinger was charged about two weeks later on a first-degree rape charge involving an adult woman.
He must register as a sex offender and avoid contact with the victims after he is released.
