Florence police officer killed in wreck


FLORENCE, Ala. – A Florence police officer was killed in a wreck late Saturday night, the police department said Sunday.

Jason Novak, 51, was off duty at the time of the crash, police said.

Alabama Law Enforcement Agency troopers said Novak was driving on Pine Street near the University of North Alabama when his car collided with another car. Novak died at North Alabama Medical Center, troopers said.

The driver of the other car also was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, troopers said.

The wreck is under investigation.

According to the police department, Novak had been with the department for more than 20 years.
