ALTOONA, Ala. (WHNT) – The Etowah County Sheriff’s Office said the recent death of a small child appears to be an accident.

Sheriff Todd Entrekin said the 3-year-old boy was found in a vehicle outside of a home on Highway 278 West in Altoona on Sunday, September 1.

The mother said she and her son were inside the house taking a nap.  When the mother woke up, she wasn’t able to find him.  She ran outside to look and found the boy in an unlocked vehicle.  She said the child had left the house on his own.

The mother immediately called 911.

The boy died five days later (Friday, September 6) at a Birmingham hospital.  An autopsy is being performed today.

Sheriff Entrekin said the investigation is ongoing.
