HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) - As the doors opened for Essential Church's first ever service in Downtown Huntsville on Sunday morning, a much larger crowd than expected took their seats.

"We wanted to start a church for the people who thought the church wasn't for them," Lead Pastor Tim Milner said.

Giving church a chance, that's what Milner said created a map for the Essential Church in Rocket City.

"I'm born and raised in Huntsville," Milner said.

Most recently, Milner started a church in a Downtown San Francisco, before he said God called him home.

"I started sensing God leading me to start a church here, I started calling people in the area and they said, 'You need to take a look at the downtown area," Milner said.

In many ways, this is still your parents' church, but in other exciting ways, Essential Church feels different.

"I'm really excited that they're reaching out to downtown Huntsville in particular, just because I see a great need here," Visitor Faith Buckley said.

Buckley is representing Mount Zion Baptist Church which has been supporting Essential Church as they plant their roots.

"I really love seeing people reach out to others, especially churches helping each other so I'm like,  'Yeah, I definitely want to go help," Buckley said.

As worship began Huntsville Junior High, Milner sent this message.

"We'd love to have you come, we'd love to have you come," Milner said.

Milner described the church as being in the "previewing phase" so they are holding services once a month until weekly services begin on February 21st.
