Keeping advertisers from tracking you through your iPhone is a lot harder than you might think. Many people think you can turn off the so-called “ad tracking” function through privacy settings but it’s a bit more complicated than that.
To adjust your iPhone go into “General” settings and click on “About.” Then scroll past all the technical data and hit “Advertising.” Lastly, turn on “Limit Ad Tracking.”
Larry Magid, CBS Technology Analyst, said it’s very difficult to figure out how to do this on your own and that “there’s nothing intuitive about [the process.]”
Magid said Apple has to answer to advertisers at the end of the day, so burying the ad tracking feature in iOS6 makes business sense.
“I think that if you’re going to give people the ability to control privacy, you should make it obvious how they do it. And by hiding it and making it obscure, it’s sort of privacy denied,” Magid said.
