DECATUR, Ala. — The United Methodist North Alabama Conference Disaster Response Team maintains a disaster relief warehouse in Decatur. They respond to everything from tornadoes to water problems, through the United Methodist Committee on Relief. It’s a wide network, relied upon for help across the Tennessee Valley.

They are once again responding to help the community after a water advisory affecting West Morgan East Lawrence Water Authority and West Lawrence Water Co-Op customers.

But they need your help getting donations of water. Those donations will go to affected communities, to be distributed through local fire departments next week. While they’ve had cases and cases donated by local Publix stores and 50 gallons donated Saturday by the Warrenton United Methodist Church out of Guntersville, they still need more.

“We’re just getting started,” said John Montgomery, a volunteer at the warehouse. “There’s not even enough for one day. They will give out all this water Monday afternoon, and there will be none left. So we have got to get the ball rolling and get a lot more water.”

He’s hoping that message resonates like ripples in a pond, and more help will come trickling in from you. He says any amount can help.

“From a case to a truckload, we’ll make sure it gets where it’s needed,” he explained.

“I hope it will show that others care,” said Cena Tabor from Warrenton United Methodist Church. “We see our neighbors in need, so it’s our Christian duty to respond.” She’s hoping more people and organizations follow suit.

To donate water to the warehouse for distribution to those affected by the water advisory, you can call 256-341-9961. The warehouse is located at 3220 US 31, Building F in Decatur. Once you turn onto the road where the warehouse is, you’ll see signs for the water drop-off that will lead you around to the back. They ask that you call ahead for larger shipments, so volunteers can assemble and meet you.
