ATHENS, Ala. (WHNT) – Good news – all power has been restored after three substations went out shortly before 12 p.m. in Athens.

Athens Utilities reports Breeding Park, Poplar Creek and Mt. Rozell substations are back online.  Amy Golden, Customer Relations Manager, said crews had all power restored by 12:30 p.m.

The outage affected more than 11,000 customers in Athens and several nearby communities.

The substations went down because the feed from a transmission line was lost.  Golden said an insulator failed inside a TVA-owned capacitor bank, causing the breaker to trip that feeds the three substations.  Golden said Athens Utilities crews identified the problem and isolated it.

Impacted areas include Salem, Goodsprings, Coxey, Ripley, Tanner, and parts of Athens.  A WHNT News 19 viewer reported power was also out in Clements.

Again, all power is restored now.
