DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) – Decatur City Jail corrections officers found a man dead in a jail cell early Sunday morning.

Decatur Police arrested Marty Earl Whisman and his daughter late Saturday night. They charged them both with public intoxication. Police also charged Whisman with resisting his daughter’s arrest. Officials transported Whisman and his daughter to the Decatur City Jail.

According to an incident report, corrections officers served breakfast at 5:00 a.m. Sunday morning. The officers say Whisman did not get up to take a tray. Corrections officers entered the cell and found Whisman lying on his mat, unresponsive.

Decatur Police say the officers immediately began CPR and called for assistance. Decatur Fire & Rescue and First Response arrived and took Whisman to Decatur Morgan Hospital. Emergency room doctor’s pronounced Whisman dead shortly after.

According to relatives, Whisman had a history of heart problems and suffered a heart attack in 2012.

The Alabama Bureau of Investigation has been called and will be reviewing the incident. The Alabama Department of Forensic Science will preform an autopsy.
