LIMESTONE COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) - A home in Elkmont burned Wednesday afternoon shortly after the residents left to go somewhere.

The home, on New Garden Road, is a total loss.  Flames had engulfed the structure by the time volunteer firefighters arrived.  The closest fire hydrant was a few miles away, further leading to the fire getting out of hand.

The flames shot very high at some points, and were so powerful local utility crews had to cut off service to nearby homes because the power lines were at risk of catching on fire.

Firefighters also dealt with extreme heat while they worked to contain the fire.

No word yet on what caused the home to catch fire.  No one was injured.
