Detention officer facing drug trafficking charges in Morgan County

MORGAN COUNTY, Ala. —  A Detention Officer at the Morgan County Jail has been arrested following an investigation involving prison contraband.

The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office reports that Agents with the Morgan County Drug Task Force received information from multiple sources that  Evan Leath Burgess had been involved in bringing illegal items into the jail.

Agents began an investigation that uncovered a plan for Burgess to bring in narcotics to an inmate in return for money.

On Saturday night, Agents observed Burgess meeting with an individual and receive a package in the parking lot of Target shopping center .

Burgess was arrested and charged with trafficking in Oxycontin and booked into the Morgan County Jail with a $50,000.00 bond.

Additional arrests may be pending.
