DECATUR, Ala. — City leaders have asked an advertising firm to come up with a new slogan for Decatur.
Last year, city leaders in Decatur started work on a comprehensive plan to promote the town, spending more than a year several thousand dollars to come up with a snappy slogan. The goal was to attract tourists and potential neighbors. The Birmingham-based consulting firm, Big Communications showcased the winning idea “A little different.”
Mayor Tab Bowling said the campaign would start possibly as far away as Chattanooga and utilize “billboards, production, publications in magazines, things of that nature.”
The mayor and neighbors involved in the planning process were in favor. But Mayor Bowling says enough upset neighbors contacted city council members that at Monday’s meeting, the council effectively killed the campaign. Even though the city had already spent over $100,000.
“Finding a good name to put up. Catch some tourists attention. Maybe get some people to move in,” Decatur resident Darius Hunt said.
“I can understand how some people may think it’s limiting and not descriptive enough,” Decatur resident Kelly Holland said.
When asked about how they feel about going back to the drawing board, Big Communications told WHNT News 19:
“In our industry, work gets critiqued and rejected and revised every single day. We look forward to working with the city to come up with a campaign that accomplishes their objectives.”
“I’d say we need to add something about the historical aspect of Decatur. I don’t think a lot people are aware how rich the history is here,” Holland said.
“We’ll do it at the speed of right. That’s one of the things we learned from this,” Bowling said.
Mayor Bowling says they committed around $260,000 to the ad campaign, but says it’s unlikely the new billboards will be ready this fall.
The city council plans to have a work session to talk about the matter, including public input on August 26.
