DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) - Managers at the Decatur Mall say this year's Christmas shopping season is off to a good start. Some stores were open overnight and the mall sponsored a promotion designed to get people to spend more. We found other reasons sales may be up this year.
Guess who we saw at the Decatur Mall today?
No, it wasn't Nick Saban, but almost everyone else was there. It certainly seemed that way. Management says traffic has been exceptional so far, and they expect to post an increase in sales over last year. The shoppers we spoke with say they'll probably spend more this year than last.
"Probably a little bit more because we have a new granddaughter and this will be her first christmas," explains Lisa King, who was shopping with her daughter.
A big factor is the completion of Beltline Road making it much easier now for motorists to get to the Decatur Mall. A spokesperson for the mall told us they believe that hampered sales as well as traffic last year.
That leaves the merchants free to focus on merchandising and shoppers can then focus on their shopping lists.
Barry Hagen and his son drove to the Decatur Mall from Moulton. "Yeah, we actually got up this morning, we didn't go last night, and found everything we needed, everything we needed," he said.
Meanwhile, Lisa says she actually started her Christmas shopping last month, but she's still looking for one more thing.
"I'm looking for a great pair of boots." You get the feeling the boots may be for her? We trust she'll find them.
The people we spoke with told us electronics and clothing were the big things they were looking for this year.
