Charlie Johnson, Decatur’s fire chief, is retiring.  Mayor Don Stanford confirmed this to WHNT News 19.

Johnson’s retirement takes effect May 1.  Mayor Stanford said he will appoint an interim chief soon, and then search for a permanent chief.

Johnson’s critics, many of them inside the fire department, spoke up at a Decatur City Council meeting in late March.  They would not say specifically what was wrong inside the fire department, citing legal warnings.

Here is WHNT News 19’s report from March 26, 2012.
