Damage in Birmingham Area Leaves Almost 200,000 Without Power

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WHNT) – Extensive and extremely widespread damage from thunderstorms has left 198,000 Alabama Power customers without power.

According to a statement from Alabama Power, “Some customers in areas where there is heavy or complicated damage may not get power until later this week.”

There are already crews on the scene, repairing damage, but Alabama Power will request the aid of neighboring states to assist in repairs.

As of 5:30pm, there are 196,000 Alabama Power customers without service:

  • 95,000 to the east of Birmingham (Anniston, Gadsden, Oneonta)
  • 68,000 in metro Birmingham
  • 31,000 to the west of Birmingham (Jasper, Fayette, Carbon Hill)
  • 1,700 to the south (Clanton, Alexander City)
