An unexpected murder charge gets handed down to a Colbert County boy for the shooting death of 14-year-old Dylan Milam.

Colbert County Sheriffs deputies arrested the suspect at his home, late Thursday afternoon.

Investigators collected evidence from the scene and spoke to witnesses.  Then Colbert County investigators got a break.

“Our investigators were able to uncover new information and evidence that involved the death of Dylan Milam,” said Colbert County Sheriff, Ronnie May.  “They followed through with that and were able to talk with individuals that had new information for us.”

May credits the dedicated work of his detectives, which led to a murder charge for the juvenile.

“You can’t stop when you have enough.  You have to continue to search because that`s your job, to find the truth to the best of your ability,” said May.

According to May, 911 recordings and hospital records will be turned over to prosecutors.

“You always work every case as a homicide until you can prove differently.  You owe it to the victim, to the victim’s family, you owe it to anyone who may be a suspect because you want to have absolutely the right information,” said May.

According to Sheriff May, since the teen is just 13 years old, he cannot be tried as an adult.  May says this means if convicted the teen could spend as little as a year behind bars.

“It`s a little sad to learn that if you intentionally take a life at that age, that`s all the punishment you`re going to get,” said May.

According to Sheriff May, this case will now go to a grand jury to decide if anyone will face charges in this case.

The teen appeared before a Colbert County judge for a preliminary hearing Friday morning.

Since this is a juvenile case, the courtroom was closed to the public.
