If you use Twitter, you’ve become very acquainted with the “#”, now more popularly known as the hashtag.

Now, Facebook is about to hash it out with Twitter by adding hashtags.

According to an article in the Wall Street Journal, Facebook is working on incorporating the hashtag by using the symbol as a way to group conversations.

The article says it is unclear how far along Facebook’s work on the hashtag is and the feature isn’t likely to be introduced in the next few weeks.

Facebook is testing whether to follow Twitter’s lead and allow users to click on a hashtag to pull up all posts about similar topics or events so it can quickly index conversations around trending topics and build those conversations up.

So, why do this?  Facebook officials suspect it will give users more reason to stay logged in and see more ads.

Instagram, which Facebook acquired in 2012, already uses hashtags, allowing users to sort photos by the symbol.

So, it’s another sign of the intense battle between Facebook and Twitter, competing for mobile users and advertising dollars.
