“Person Of Interest” Named In Travers Homicide

DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) – Decatur Police say they are looking for Charles Makekau, 23, in connection with the murder of Jamie Travers on June 18, 2013.

Investigators tell WHNT News 19 Makekau has an active warrant for perjury. Police say Makekau provided false and misleading information to investigators during questioning in the case.

Travers’ body was discovered by police lying along the side of Highway 31 at approximately 1:30 A.M. on the morning of June 18th. He had been shot to death. Officers were responding to a burglary in progress call at the time.

Police say a woman they identified only as Travers’ girlfriend told them she and Travers were in bed asleep when two men forced their way into the home. She told police Travers ran from the house and that moments later she heard gunshots outside, looked and saw two heavy set men running south away from the scene.

Makekau is one of several people interviewed in the course of the investigation. He has not been named by police as a suspect in the shooting.
